Money Changers in the Gun Stores
Want to own the kind of weapon that slayed 20 children? You better act fast.
No one will ever go broke underestimating the taste of the American gun enthusiast. The rush is on. The fear is that the Newton shooting is about to cause new restrictions on assault weapons and high capacity magazines. (picture right is the President of the NRA, David Keene with a Bushmaster mustache.)
Gun stores are reporting a massive spike in sales, especially of the country’s most popular AR-15 — the same model used to do the dirty work of both Adam Lanza and the Aurora shooter. Fearing Obama could reinstate the expired federal assault weapons ban (or sidestep the right-to-bear-arms debate by outlawing selling ammo), sales are through the roof, and stocks are running low. What if a burglar enters your home? Suppose the intruder is carrying an assault weapon with a high count magazine and all you have it a sportsman’s rifle. You don’t want to be caught at such a disadvantage, and time may be running out for you to own a weapon that will level the playing field.
Even if you do not intend to use the weapon for protection, the Bushmaster rifle may soon be legislated out of existence. Those who own one will have a real trophy that is worth money. The sale price of the weapon has risen to over $1000 dollars. Can you imagine what it might be worth on just a few years?
The Bell Curve of Compassion
When I heard of the spike in sales of the very same weapons that had killed 20 children just days ago, I was mortified. I am aware that I do not stand in the middle of the bell curve when it comes to owning a gun. In fact, when I shared the idea of this post to a friend, he said, “You’re crazy”. “If people were killed by poison, or an electric drill, would you look down everyone who went out buy the items?”
I see a strong difference in the two instances, but after listening to the response, I changed the subject.
Yes, it is true – literally. Freedom is for sale. The killing of innocent children has struck such a deep cord throughout the county that Freedom, the arm of the company -Cerberus- which makes the Bushmaster rifle, is for sale. Freedom is now for sale.
“As a firm, we are investors, not statesmen or policy makers,” the Cerberus statement said. “It is not our role to take positions, or attempt to shape or influence the gun control policy debate. That is the job of our federal and state legislators.”
